“ ハワイのカウアイ島で、州立公園への取り付け道路が海に流されてしまった。州政府は修復の予算がないと言った。そうなればこの公園は閉鎖されてしまう。すると地元経済への悪影響を心配した会社のグループが活動を始めた。 ボランティアを募って、自分だちで道路を修復したのだ。私はこれはDIY公共事業と呼んだ。するとScott Heifermanに訂正された。DIOだというのだ。‘Do it Yourselfではなく、‘Doit Ourselvesが正しい、という。政府自身が自らを単なる自動販売機と考えることを止めて、市民による公共事業の組織者に変わったらどうなるだろう？　DIOのアプローチは道路を修繕するだけでなく、他の困難な問題にも適用可能なのではないか？　市民と政府の関係を根本的に再編し、政府は自らサービスを提供するだけでなく、民間がさまざまなサービスを開発して提供するためのメカニズムそのものを提供するようになったら？　つまり、政府がプラットフォームになったら、どういうことが可能になるだろう？
